Lunchtime is a daily moment of rest, a parenthesis in which the daily frenzy comes to a halt, albeit briefly, around the table. But food is also a very important cultural vector that expresses a personal and collective identity. Cocinando historias de patatas (Cooking Potato Stories) takes the potato as a leitmotif, and questions the way in which translocal histories of food and different gastronomic cultures intertwine with the colonial past and determine the way in which we represent ourselves and others.

“When you say potato, the answer is often an autobiography”. The project, which arises from the migrant experience of Ana Núñez Rodríguez between Latin America and Europe, brings together testimonials, anecdotes, recipes and memories related to this well-travelled vegetable, seen in many different parts of the world as part of their own cuisine. The result is a “transatlantic recipe” that reflects on the idea of territory as something more than a political or geographical space. Territory, from the perspective of all these life stories, also appears as a narrative place: a space in the mind as much as a place on the map.

Ana Núñez Rodríguez was born in Lugo, Spain, in 1984 and lives and works between Spain and Colombia. She studied Documentary Photography and Contemporary Creation at IDEP Barcelona, holds a postgraduate degree in Photography from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and a master’s degree in Photography and Society from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague. In 2020 she received the Grant for Independent Editorial Projects from the Instituto Distrital de las Artes de Colombia, which enabled her to publish the book Flor de roca. In 2020-2021 she was part of Lighthouse, a programme for upcoming talents at Fotodok (Utrecht) and in 2022 she was selected to be part of FuturesPhotography, a platform for emerging photographers in Europe, was nominated for FUTURES 2022 by Der Greif, a contemporary photography organization and received the Editorial Award for Galician Documentary Photography from FFoco, Festival de Fotografía da Coruña. Ana has exhibited both individually and collectively at FOAM Fotografiemuseum (Amsterdam), Photo Ireland (Dublin), Festival Circulation(s) (Paris) or the upcoming biennial Food Culture Days (Vevey). Her work has been published in Foam Magazine, GUP Magazine, Yet Magazine, Fisheye, El Malpensante, Jot Down or C-41 Magazine, among others.
