Phil Toledano
Gamers

Toledano has never been interested in simple frontal formal portraiture. His Gamers series is the result of the need that drives him when making portraits. He wishes the portrait to provide more information than that given by pure pose, so that some hint can be divined of the psychology of the individuals portrayed. When placed before a console, their faces are transformed and release, through their expressions, the information that he misses in conventional orthodox portraits.
Phil Toledano was born in London to a French-Moroccan mother and American father, is currently living in New York. His father was an artist; Phil grew up in his workshop watching him paint and sculpt, and going to galleries. He started to take photographs when he was 11 and has not stopped since then. Toledano’s work is defined as socio-political, employing photography and installation. His work has appeared in various publications, including Vanity Fair, The New York Times, The New Yorker and Le Monde. He has also shown his work in different exhibitions throughout the world.
