Over the course of three years, James set up a photography set at the exit to concerts given by Arctic Monkeys, The Cure, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliot, 50 Cent, Iron Maiden, Elton John, Tom Jones, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Madonna, Marilyn Manson, George Michael, Morrissey, Oasis, Dolly Parton, Iggy Pop, Prince, Radiohead, Rolling Stones, Sex Pistols, Rod Stewart, Take That… He made portraits of the different groups of die-hard fans, tribes and followers who attend these concerts, creating a fascinating social document, ethnography in its pure state, where we see how fans try to emulate and mimic their idols’ manners and dress, bedecking themselves in the particular style of their chosen apostle.

James Mollison was born in 1973 in Kenya and grew up in England. He studied Art and Design at Oxford Brookes University and Documentary Photography at the Newport School of Art and Design. He worked in Italy on Benetton’s creative project, Fabrica. He currently lives in Venice and contributes to Colors magazine, The Guardian, El País, Le Monde and i-D magazine, amongst others.
