Through Ánima, Maquieira suggests that there exists a special relationship between life and death, and uses photography as a medium to show the space that lies between them. He tries to express the livelier side of stuffed animals through a photography which, when exhibited to the public, already represents a time that belongs to the past, that does not exist anymore and is therefore close to death.

Puertollano, Ciudad Real, 1966. A disciple of Fernando Gordillo, Maquieira belongs to the Madrid School. He has developed that special eye which focuses upon everyday subjects and portrays them with an intense, poetic simplicity. He has recently shown his work at several individual and collective exhibitions. Furthermore, he received the scholarship FotoPres’07 from the Fundación La Caixa, and the second prize at the Photography Festival of Notodofest.com in 2007. In 2008 he published Escenarios patagónicos and obtained a scholarship from the Academia de España in Rome.
